Michael Collins was born in West Cork in 1890 and emigrated to London in 1906.
He became a member of the IRB in 1909 in London and was one of the first members of branch of Irish Volunteers based in London 1914. He returned to Ireland - in GPO during the Easter Rising and played a minor role.
As a result he was sent to prison camp in Wales and emerges as a leader.
He was released from prison Dec. 1916 and begun to re-organise the Volunteers.
He was elected as Sinn Fein TD in 1918 and was appointed Minister for Finance in the first Dail in 1919. He raised a huge amount of money for the Dail loan around £350,000. He began guerilla warfare in the Anglo-Irish war of 1919-21. He set up and trained his own soldiers called the "Squad" they would help get rid of english soldiers all for the "Irish cause".
He had a very effective spy-network operating in Dublin in key places. He became the most wanted man in Ireland - £10,000 price on his head. When the violence of the War of Independence got too much and the English wanted a Treaty Collins was sent to London by De Valera to negotiate Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921.
He was very reluctant to go at first but agreed to go after a lot of pressure
Alongside Arthur Griffith they signed the Treaty on December 6th 1921 - felt it was the best possible deal available. He defended his decision to sign the Treaty in Dáil debates in Jan. 1922
He saw the Treaty as “a stepping stone” to an Irish Republic. De Valera and other members left the Dail thus causing a split in Ireland one pro treaty (Collins) the other anti Treaty (De Valera)
Collins became key member of new provisional government and he made great efforts to prevent outbreak of civil war in Ireland which occurred despite his efforts.
He had to order the shelling of the Four Courts in June 1922 this became the start of civil war
Collins during the Civil War became the Commander-in-chief of Free State Army
He went on a military visit to West Cork, August 1922 - ambushed and killed
His death was a huge loss to the new Irish Free State
