The Middle Ages

In the middle ages people had very different ideas about the world than we do today. Very few people traveled because travel was long and dangerous. Some people traveled to Holy places, they were called P__________. There were wars in the Holy Land between Christians and M________. The Christians who fought in these wars were called C_________. The Age of Exploration


The Portuguese were the first to explore the oceans further than anyone had before. They decided that they needed to first improve their ships and sailing techniques. Prince H___________________
set up a school at Sagres. There the Portuguese built new ships called c______ and invented new instruments for sailing such as an a__________. The Portuguese wanted to explore the coast of Africa. Christopher Columbus changes the world!

An Italian sailor named Christopher Columbus had new ideas about exploration. He believed the world was round and because of this he thought that he would be able to sail to China by going west across the Atlantic Ocean. The Spanish King and Queen, F________ and I_______ agreed to sponsor him. In 1492 he set sail across the Atlantic with 3 ships, the N___, the P____ and the S____ M____. After months of sailing with his sailors frightened and sick, they finally found land. He named the island San Salvador. The people there were very different to Europeans.
